The Civil Services Mains examination aims to test the academic talent and the ability of the candidate to present the answers in a clear and coherent manner. The Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and understanding of the concepts rather than merely the check their information and memory. Every year Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services Examination for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.

The Civil Services Examination will consist of two successive stages

  • Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination.
  • Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various Services and posts.

Eligibility criteriaOnly those candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Main Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission, to the Main Examination.

Admission criteria - Admission and selection is through qualifying the UPSC examination at all three levels i.e Prelims, Mains and Interview. After which the selected candidates undergo training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. The competitive level of the exam ensures that only the best candidates get selected in the exam.
